Everything At Once #16, 2025
Oil on board, 61 x 61 cm
£450
This was painted in May 2025 and was quite pivotal in that it unlocked a solution for two other pieces that I had virtually abandoned as failures. The ground of the work is matt orange oil paint (cadmium red and yellow mixed) contrasted sensuously with brown gloss paint.

I was pleased enough with how I'd started the piece but knew it needed something radical to make it memorable. In music, two different melodies played simultaneously is called counterpoint which can create a memorable polyphonic experience for the listener. To provide the visual equivalent of the counterpoint I was seeking, I added crisp white triangles in oil paint over 50% of the picture space. The resulting play of matt and gloss textures and the starkly contrasting forms create dynamism and depth. As with #1 and #3 in this series, the design is conceptually infinite, both 'into' the picture space via any white, orange or brown area and laterally, beyond the confines of the picture edges. Its strong graphic presence makes it suitable for any medium-size, domestic or business interior.
