Everything At Once #3, 2024-25

Oil on board, 61 x 61 cm

£350

This piece started in the summer of 2024 as several washes of red oil paint on primed plyboard. I wanted a smooth finish without brush marks, so that light would fall evenly across the surface. The green shapes were added in November and the finished painting was the third in my Everything At Once series. Later, when reviewing the piece, I felt the work lacked the jeopardy needed to impose itself in a space or excite a viewer. I added black geometric lines and shapes and straight lines to compete with the irregular, organic green and red shapes. The additional black designs comprise approximately 50% of the total design. The bold, graphic contrasts provide the all-important jeopardy that abstract art needs if it's to be more than merely decorative. The contrast of the different forms creates a visual drama while maintaining a harmonic balance. The design is conceptually infinite, both 'into' the picture space via any green, red or black area and laterally, beyond the confines of the picture edges. Its strong graphic presence makes it suitable for any medium-size, modern interior.
