Twenty Centuries of Sleep, 2025

Acrylic on paper, 40 x 40 cm

£150

This is a composition, half in colour, half in black and white. The first draft of a design was extracted from some freely sketched drawings and through multiple iterations and successive layers of paint, whittled down to the essential elements in the final version. These elements are four voids of approximately equal size. The shapes are mutually dependent; the outline of one, forming the outlines of the shapes adjacent. It's a poetic play on our default reading of pictures as objects in a space, but here this object / space duality can never be resolved definitively. The relationships between the elements remains ambiguous and elusive. The title is taken from a line in The Second Coming by W.B Yeats. The image is approximately 40 by 40 centimetres on cartridge paper. Please note that the painting will be shipped to the buyer, rolled in a tube and will need mounting and framing, ideally behind non-reflective glass.
